Agrobiotechnology Talk Series (27) Earthworms for sustainable agriculture (18 January 2023)
Description:
Soil organisms play an important role as primary driving agents of nutrient cycling, soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emission, as well as enhancing soil physical structure. Recently, the ecosystem functions of soil macro-fauna like earthworms have been recognized as a nature-based solution (NbS) to tackle a range of environmental challenges because they can act as “ecosystem engineers”, being able to directly or indirectly influence the availability of natural resources to other organisms through their feeding, burrowing, and casting activities. This talk will present an overview of the role of earthworms in enhancing soil health and the growth of plant crops, and optimally achieving sustainable agriculture
