農業生物技術講座系列(三十四)環境與健康:透過暴露組研究典範開啟環境發現時代

Agrobiotechnology Talk Series (34) Environment and health: Opening an era of environmental discovery with the exposome research paradigm

Description:

Variation in health and diseases within the human population is driven by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. With the advances in sequencing technology, significant resources have been devoted to characterizing the genome in large-scale epidemiologic studies. However, it became clear that genetics are not a major contributor to the onset of many non-communicable and chronic diseases, and the importance of environmental exposures is overlooked. The exposome concept was conceived as an effort to draw parallel attention and investment from scientists and policy makers to the systematic study of the environment. In this talk, Prof. Ming Kei (Jake) Chung will introduce the idea of the totality of exposures (the exposome), recent developments in measurement technologies, and key scientific achievements of the field. He will also compare major measurement approaches and highlight key demonstrative studies. It is hoped that ultimately these efforts will accelerate the pace of translating environmental research findings into practices in public health and preventive medicine.
